“Richard has done a terrific job identifying the five key practices that support leaders in performing at their optimal best level: Self-Awareness, Self-Confidence, Motivation, Self Discipline, and Emotional Intelligence. “The author vulnerably shares details of his personal journey that will encourage others who may doubt they have the credentials to achieve their dreams and goals. Our business culture has emphasized one path as the only way to reach your goals and realize your dreams, but Richard shows that alternative paths can prevail if the individual persists! Really relevant for anyone who wants great things to happen in their lives. Richard Marks offers a valuable toolkit of perspectives and methods for becoming an effective leader, with an emphasis on improving your people skills and relationships - both at work and at home. His engaging, down-to-earth style, peppered with honest personal anecdotes that range from "oh no" to hilarious, make the concepts he explores easy to absorb. I especially appreciate that I got so much out of such a quick, enjoyable read. Highly recommended!
I was quickly drawn in. The principles are clearly stated and the concepts are presented through examples. The presentation style in the book translates well into then applying the principles into practice during your own real-life situations. You may be operating under some of the principles already, and the examples in the book help guide you to realize that and provide some validation, and perhaps reinforcement in the days following the read. Glad to have read it, and will happily to gift it to others.
This is a must read for business professionals. The author breaks down the 5 Core Principles; Self Awareness, Self Confidence, Self Motivation, Self Discipline and Emotional Intelligence, so that they are easy to apply to the business world or every day life. The book is written in a straightforward, relatable format and I especially enjoyed all of the personal antidotes and stores from the author's time in the military and business world. I highly recommend this book - honestly the best business book I have read in several years!

Whether its leading a team at work, or being the manager of a group, or owning your own business… this book has many nuggets of gold for you to find and keep….. read it, apply it…. And you will have great thing happen!!
Have you ever met a truly successful person (a REAL person, not a “personality” or “influencer”) and wished you could just sit down with them and ask: how did you do it? To me, that’s what this book was like. Reading this book felt like sitting down for coffee with a mentor who was willing to share his own deeply personal stories (good and bad!) to help me move forward, too. It’s not just about having a good career, it’s about living a good life. Not only does the author share his own principles distilled through 30 years of career and leadership experience, the book is brimming with his own very candid personal stories that illustrate and teach each of them. In a sea of boring professional development and leadership books, this one really is an entertaining and impactful gem!
An incredible, strategic book that will positively impact your business and leadership immediately during and after reading it. This author really knows what he’s talking about. Your business partners, team and colleagues will all thank you for sharing and applying the information that this book holds. I wish these principles were available in this format years ago for I would have been a more powerful and effective leader in my business and practices. Can’t wait for the next book this author shares with the world.
